PAVEGRIP 550 "ANTISTRIPPING"
Moisture Damage or stripping is a serious issue that leads to the premature failure of the bond between the aggregate and the liquid asphalt cement. A basic test such as the boiling water test (ASTM D 3625) shows that an asphalt mix that is susceptible to stripping is visible with the signs of the liquid asphalt pulling away from the surface and exposing the aggregate.
Today's Superpave test requirements recommend testing for moisture damage using AASHTO T 283. This uses tensile strength testing on compacted mix to indicate if conditioning of the sample shows the mix will strip. If the mix does strip, antistripping additive is tested to show if it will prevent stripping. Increasing the strength ratio of a weak mix or a mix that will strip, increases the strength and will extend the life span of the road.
