Construction Method

Preperations

Prior the application of ASTEK TE-1B Black Diamond, the following preperation has to be completed:

• Crack sealing
• Pot holes and other structural problems has to be repaired
• The pavement needs to be cleaned and decontaminated from oil or other permable substances
• Dust and soil needs to be removed and pressure air sweeping to be completed
• Concrete debris needs to be scraped out of the asphalt surface
• All of the structures and surface mounted elements needs to be masked and protected from splash.

Application


ASTEK TE-1B Black Diamond shall be applied in one or two layers by using a special spray equipment, supplementary hand tools and professional personnel to provide an excellent finish.

Application Rate : 1sq. meter 

250 - 350 gr ( 120 - 250 square feet / gallon)

CHIP SEALS


Surface dressings consist of application of binder course followed by spread of crushed aggregate in single or multiple layers.

Asphalt Emulsions are spread on the road by the use of an asphalt distributor. Following the emulsion application crushed aggregate is uniformly spread and rolled rapidly. Surface dressings may be applied in single or multiple layers (2 or 3). These layers can be applied on granular base or on existed paved surface.

Surface dressings have various types and construction techniques. When multiple layers are used the following advantages shall be obtained:

. The binder, when applied in multiple layers, this will create a better adhesion in between the aggregates and thus will benefit to a much better quality pavement. 
. The layers on upper coarse shall get smaller and that will help to close the voids and will create a much fine finish that will be appreciated in driving comfort. 
. There shall be a more even residue set in the pavement that will benefit a better resistance and durability.

Fog Seal Construction Method

Fog seals are also used to color the surface with its uniform black appearance. Fog seals can be used on low and medium traffic pavements for the following purpose:

. Rejuvenate the old existing pavements
. Fills up the small hairline cracks and gaps
. Strengthen the distressed pavement exposed to excessive cold climate
. Strengthen the surface dressing exposed to heavy snow plowing
. Give black appearance to new surface dressing
. Help to strengthen the open graded pavement against raveling

Fog Seals are used on low and medium damaged and raveled pavements where the surface has got enough voids to absorb the emulsion.

Fog seals have a very successful background, applying on new surface dressings to provide black appearance.

Certain application techniques have proven that fog seals have a very good performance to improve the bonding and provide a smooth black appearance, when two thin layers of fog seal is applied over a new surface dressing.

Fog Seals, while improving the surface dressing endurance against snow plowing, it also provides a wonderful appearance with its smooth black texture.

Fog Seals have a good reputation for effective fighting against the raveling problems that happens on most open graded asphalts

SLURRY SEAL

The slurry seal consists with a homogenous mixture of an approved emulsified asphalt, crushed aggregate, water, and additives, proportioned, mixed and uniformly spread over a properly prepared surface applied by specially designed machinery and skilled ASTEK personnel. FOG SEAL

The sealer sprayed on the pavement as diluted emulsion to protect the pavement against the weather effects.

ASTEK INFRARED PATCHING SYSTEM

Astek introduces the “Infrared Asphalt Patching system”, the newest state of the art asphalt repairing technology in the pavement industry. 

The repair is established by employing infrared heating to the defected area that penetrates through the surface and brings the temperature to the laying level. After the pavement is recyled with the addition of virgin materials and rejuvinators that will promote the adhession, the pavement is compacted and the surface is sealed with special products in order to gain a more stronger surface. HOW DOES SLURRY SEAL IS APPLIED?

Slurry Seal is applied with specially designed machinery; either truck mounted or attached to a tractor. The specially designed machinery will provide a homogenous mixture that is prescribed by a mix design of a Slurry Surfacing Laboratory. The mixture prepared and mixed by a pug mill at the machinery is delivered to a spreader box attached behind the machinery. The material is spread on pavement continuously at one step with the movement of the vehicle ahead. The new pavement shall be opened to slow traffic within few hours after the application.

MIX DESIGN

ASTEK LVB shall be used at 14-35 degrees Celsius and should not be applied when rain is expected. The material should not be stored under direct sun light.

ASTEK LVB, is specially produced for ASTEK in the U.S.A. and designed to meet all the requirement for sports playing surfaces. LVB has a wide reference list of being used on many tennis courts and playing grounds.

Astek VG can be used in two or three layers depending on the surface conditions. First two layers shall be used to fill up the small holes and the third layer shall be the finish coat. The first layer shall be applied lengthwise and the second or the last layer should be applied breadthways. The application shall be done using a proper squeegee or a spray system.

PRODUCT

Pavegrip 550 is a concentrated 100% active liquid antistripping additive.  It's 100% active formulation makes this low odor, heat stable product a high performance additive that can help with even the most difficult mix designs.

It is well document through research that using additives will help prevent moisture damage. The use of an additive is recommended in all levels of the roadbed as moisture / water attacks from all sides:

. Surface water forced in by the weight of heavy vehicles
. From the side of the road bed due to poor side drainage
. From beneath the road as ground pressure pushes water up in to the road

This water is the bond breaker that leads to 
failure ! 


There are two major benefits to using liquid antistripping additives:

1) Increased adhesion improves performance, which increases the lifespan of the pavement - saving money long term in reduced maintenance.

The strength of the asphalts adhesion to the aggregate is measured using a test called the TSR test (Tensile Strength Ratio). Asphalt samples are compacted for testing in which one is set aside as is (the control) while the other is conditioned (a series of heating and freezing). A breaking head is used to measure the amount of pressure required to break the sample.

TSR = average conditioned strength / average control strength (Most agencies require a TSR minimum of 80%)

2) Another advantage to liquid additives is that they allow the use of less expensive aggregates

The ability to use less expensive aggregate reduces the overall cost per ton of mix - which provides significant savings!

ASTEK High Performance Cold Patch is a high quality, pre-mixed, asphalt "cold patch" compound. Combining a carefully selected aggregate with a special bitumen formula.

ASTEK High Performance Cold Patch is highly recommended for spot repairs to driveways and dry pavement with no loss of bonding ability. The most important benefit to remember is the fact the ASTEK High Performance Cold Patch is the "Permanent Patch" and should remain in the repaired area indefinitely. Money will be saved in labor costs because, workers will not be constantly repairing an area where a other types of "cold patch" asphalt mix was used

COVERAGE

Depth and width of pothole, crack, utility cut etc. will greatly influence the coverage rate achieved. As a rule however, a three gallon pail of ASTEK High Performance Cold Patch will fill a two inch deep hole, four square feet is size.

PREPARATION

Simply sweep out the area to be repaired with a bristled brush or broom. It is a good idea to remove any loose debris, dirt, ice, or standing water from the area to be repaired. This action will promote good adhesion and bonding. More

APPLICATION

No heating or mixing is required. Simply shovel into the pothole, crack, or rut, straight from the container. If the fault is especially deep, i.e. over six inches, apply in two inch layers, compacting each layer in succession. Shovel enough material into the fault to slightly crown the "patch". When completed, compress the "patch" with the pneumatic tamper. Area can be opened to traffic immediately. More

STORAGE

The depth and width of the area to be applied plays an important role in the variability of the application amount. As a general rule, a 25 kg ASTEK High Performance Cold Patch Material can repair a 25x25cm hollow area with a depth of approximately 4-5cm. More
