Prior the application of ASTEK TE-1B Black Diamond, the following preperation has to be completed:
• Crack sealing
• Pot holes and other structural problems has to be repaired
• The pavement needs to be cleaned and decontaminated from oil or other permable substances
• Dust and soil needs to be removed and pressure air sweeping to be completed
• Concrete debris needs to be scraped out of the asphalt surface
• All of the structures and surface mounted elements needs to be masked and protected from splash.
Surface dressings consist of application of binder course followed by spread of crushed aggregate in single or multiple layers.
Asphalt Emulsions are spread on the road by the use of an asphalt distributor. Following the emulsion application crushed aggregate is uniformly spread and rolled rapidly. Surface dressings may be applied in single or multiple layers (2 or 3). These layers can be applied on granular base or on existed paved surface.
Surface dressings have various types and construction techniques. When multiple layers are used the following advantages shall be obtained:
. The binder, when applied in multiple layers, this will create a better adhesion in between the aggregates and thus will benefit to a much better quality pavement.
. The layers on upper coarse shall get smaller and that will help to close the voids and will create a much fine finish that will be appreciated in driving comfort.
. There shall be a more even residue set in the pavement that will benefit a better resistance and durability.
Fog seals are also used to color the surface with its uniform black appearance. Fog seals can be used on low and medium traffic pavements for the following purpose:
. Rejuvenate the old existing pavements
. Fills up the small hairline cracks and gaps
. Strengthen the distressed pavement exposed to excessive cold climate
. Strengthen the surface dressing exposed to heavy snow plowing
. Give black appearance to new surface dressing
. Help to strengthen the open graded pavement against raveling
Fog Seals are used on low and medium damaged and raveled pavements where the surface has got enough voids to absorb the emulsion.
Fog seals have a very successful background, applying on new surface dressings to provide black appearance.
Certain application techniques have proven that fog seals have a very good performance to improve the bonding and provide a smooth black appearance, when two thin layers of fog seal is applied over a new surface dressing.
Fog Seals, while improving the surface dressing endurance against snow plowing, it also provides a wonderful appearance with its smooth black texture.
Fog Seals have a good reputation for effective fighting against the raveling problems that happens on most open graded asphalts

The strength of the asphalts adhesion to the aggregate is measured using a test called the TSR test (Tensile Strength Ratio). Asphalt samples are compacted for testing in which one is set aside as is (the control) while the other is conditioned (a series of heating and freezing). A breaking head is used to measure the amount of pressure required to break the sample.
TSR = average conditioned strength / average control strength (Most agencies require a TSR minimum of 80%)
2) Another advantage to liquid additives is that they allow the use of less expensive aggregates
